Natural Bridge Caverns takes visitors 180 feet underground along about 2 miles of mapped passage, and it sits just 20 miles north of downtown San Antonio. Here is what newcomers should know before they go.
The numbers: a 60-foot bridge and a 180-foot descent
Natural Bridge Caverns is named for the 60-foot natural limestone bridge that spans its entrance, and the classic Discovery Tour descends 180 feet below the surface. Explorers have mapped about 2 miles of passage, roughly 11,000 feet per the Texas Speleological Survey, which makes it the largest commercial cavern in Texas.
It is also conveniently close: about 20 miles, or 30 minutes, north of downtown San Antonio off Interstate 35.
A quick history
On March 27, 1960, four St. Mary's University students, Orion Knox, Preston Knodell, Joe Cantu, and Al Brandt, crawled through a 22-inch crack and found the cavern. It opened to the public on July 3, 1964, and was designated a U.S. National Natural Landmark in 1971.
That is the kind of story that makes the tour feel personal: real college kids, a tiny opening, and a huge underground world behind it.
What the tours are like
The Discovery Tour is the classic guided walk along the half-mile show route. Beyond it, there are Hidden Wonders tours, combo tickets that add the outdoor attractions, and specialty adventure tours for the brave.
Admission is dynamically priced, so it varies by date and by how far ahead you book. In 2026, walk-up rates for the Discovery Tour ran about $31, with parking at $10 per vehicle. Booking ahead locks in a better price and a start time that fits your day.
How newcomers should plan the trip
Give it a half day and dress for the cave's steady, comfortable underground temperature, which holds about the same year-round. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything: the walkway is well maintained, but the route is a tour, not a race.
The grounds above ground are part of the outing too, with trails and outdoor attractions, so there is plenty to do before and after the descent.
Because it is a straight shot up I-35, the caverns pair easily with a Hill Country day, and it works for every age, which is why it stays on family lists year after year.
An easy win for a San Antonio visit
For newcomers, Natural Bridge Caverns is the kind of place that sells the whole area in one afternoon: big Hill Country scenery, a genuine piece of Texas history, and a family outing that does not demand a full day.
It is also a reminder that the best part of living here is the weekend list, and the list never runs out.
