San Antonio farmers markets: where to shop like a local on weekends

The Pearl Farmers Market (312 Pearl Pkwy) runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round, rain or shine, with more than 50 local vendors selling produce, artisan foods, and handcrafted goods, plus free cooking demos and live music.

It is as much a social scene as a shopping trip, and the whole River North neighborhood comes alive around it. If you only do one market, this is the one.

The Alamo Heights Farmers Market sets up Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alamo Quarry Market (255 E Basse Rd). It is a producers-only market, so the people selling grew or made what you are buying: fresh produce, fermented foods, juices, meats, and artisan goods.

The producers-only rule means smaller, higher-quality vendors and a more intimate crowd.

Also on Sundays, the Quarry Farmers & Ranchers Market runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Alamo Quarry Market parking lot, right next to Whole Foods on E Basse Rd. It is another growers- and producers-only market, a great option if you are already heading to the Quarry for the day.

An easy add-on is the Cibolo Farmers Market at Herff Farm in Boerne, every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 33 Herff Road. It brings local produce, handmade goods, and seasonal classes to one of the Hill Country's most scenic spots.

Combine it with a Boerne weekend and you have a lovely day out.

Farmers markets are one of the friendliest ways to learn a new city. Vendors and regulars are happy to chat, and you will leave with both groceries and a better sense of the neighborhood.
