The San Antonio River Walk by the numbers: 15 miles and 9 million visitors a year

The River Walk is about 15 miles of riverside walkways and draws more than 9 million visitors a year, one of Texas' top attractions. Here is how newcomers can actually enjoy it the way locals do.

The numbers: 15 miles, 9 million visits

The River Walk is a network of walkways along the San Antonio River totaling about 15 miles, including roughly 5 miles through downtown, per Visit San Antonio's fact sheet. Texas Parks & Wildlife reports more than 9 million visitors a year, putting it in the same league as the Alamo for drawing power.

What those numbers miss is how it feels at 7 a.m. with the cypress shade and almost no one around, which is how most visitors never see it.

Think of the river as three stretches, not one

Visitors usually see the downtown loop and assume that is it. Locals know the river is a system: the classic bend downtown, the Museum Reach heading north to the Pearl, and the Mission Reach heading south past the missions.

The full walk is essentially free, so a weekend, or a few afternoons, can cover all three with time for lunch at each end.

How newcomers should do it

Ride the barge once, walk the bend once, and spend your second visit north at the Pearl on a Saturday market morning. If your family likes hiking, the Mission Reach passes four Spanish colonial missions, and a longer river walk can become a missions day.

There is a full weekend plan for the river on this site, so you do not have to invent the route.

The river as a neighborhood anchor

The River Walk is also the front door to some of San Antonio's most interesting places to live: King William's historic homes and oak-shaded streets sit steps south of downtown, and the Museum Reach connects the Pearl to the city center.

When newcomers ask which neighborhoods feel like the real San Antonio, the answer is often the ones within walking distance of water.

The honest, local take

Nine million visitors make the downtown bend a bustling, fun, occasionally crowded place, especially on holiday weekends. Go early, go on a weekday, or simply go north, and you will find the quieter river that locals claim as theirs.

That is the whole trick: the River Walk works for everyone, as long as you know which stretch is yours.
