What North East ISD is known for
The magnet-school crown jewel. NEISD is home to two of the most sought-after public programs in South Texas: the International School of the Americas (ISA), a globally focused high school magnet at Legacy of Educational Excellence (LEE) High School, and the North East School of the Arts (NESA), a prestigious arts magnet with seven majors from musical theatre and dance to cinema and creative writing. Both are admission by application.
Depth across the north side. The district covers a huge slice of north and northeast San Antonio, including Stone Oak, Timberwood Park, and the inner ring, so families can live in many different neighborhoods and stay in the same district.
Strong comprehensive high schools. Ronald Reagan High School, which serves much of Stone Oak, is consistently ranked among the top high schools in Texas with high AP participation, and Churchill, Johnson, MacArthur, Madison, and Roosevelt each have deep traditions.
Fine arts and speech and debate. NEISD wins UIL Sweepstakes in music year after year and has a district-wide reputation for arts programs that extend far beyond the magnet schools.
What families should know
The B is an improvement worth watching. NEISD's overall rating climbed from C to B in 2026, with B grades for school progress and closing the gaps; district averages hide wide variation between campuses, so look at the specific school your address feeds.
Magnet schools have their own admissions. ISA and NESA are application-based and competitive, and the STEM Academy at LEE adds another option, so families wanting those programs must plan well ahead of starting high school.
Size is a feature and a challenge. With nearly 55,000 students and 67 campuses, NEISD offers enormous program variety but can feel sprawling; the feeder pattern for your street determines the experience more than the district brand.
Stone Oak is the big draw. Reagan High School's reputation drives demand across the Stone Oak master-planned communities, and homes there carry a premium, though plenty of older established neighborhoods feed the same district at lower price points.
Commutes stay manageable. Most NEISD neighborhoods sit within 15 to 30 minutes of downtown, and the district straddles Loop 1604 and the inner loop, so the commute vs. schools balance is among the best in the city.
