Enchanted Rock: an $8 entry and a 425-foot granite dome, an hour from Boerne

By Phyllis Domingo, REALTOR® · San Antonio Relocation Specialist · 6 min read

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area costs $8 per adult to enter, rises about 425 feet above the surrounding Hill Country to 1,825 feet above sea level, and sits about an hour from Boerne and about 90 minutes from San Antonio. Here is what a day trip there actually looks like, including the honest notes on crowds.

The headline numbers

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area sits about 18 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road 965, roughly an hour from Boerne and about 90 minutes from San Antonio. Entry is $8 per adult for ages 13 and up, children 12 and under are free, and the summit of the pink granite dome stands 1,825 feet above sea level, about 425 feet above the starting point.

Texas Parks and Wildlife expanded the park in 2025, taking it to about 5,400 acres, more than double its original 1,640.5 acres.

The dome is the whole show

Enchanted Rock is one of the largest pink granite domes in the United States, a bare rock expanse covering about 640 acres that has drawn people for thousands of years, from Tonkawa legend to today's weekend hikers.

The summit trail climbs steadily, and the final stretch over bare rock is steep and demands sure footing, but the payoff is a 360-degree view over rolling Hill Country that explains in one glance why people drive an hour for it.

Crowds and timing, honestly

Weekends and holidays fill up. The park can reach capacity and stop admitting visitors on busy Saturdays, so Texas Parks and Wildlife's own advice is the honest plan: arrive early, and check the park's day-use rules before you go.

Fall and spring weekends are the busiest, and summer afternoons on exposed granite are brutally hot, which is why sunrise visits are such a popular workaround.

What else the day holds

Fredericksburg is 18 miles south on the same road, good for lunch and a walk down Main Street after the hike, and Boerne is about an hour on the far side of the morning, which makes the whole thing an easy loop from Hill Country life.

Bring water for everyone, shoes with grip for the dome, and a hat, because there is very little shade up top. The park also has camping if you want the full night-sky finish, though most families do it as a day trip.

  • $8 per adult, free for kids 12 and under.
  • Summit at 1,825 feet, about 425 feet above the base.
  • About an hour from Boerne and about 90 minutes from San Antonio.
  • A summit trail with a steep, bare-rock final stretch and sweeping Hill Country views.

Why it matters for newcomers

Enchanted Rock is the kind of day trip that makes Hill Country living feel close: from Boerne or northern San Antonio you can leave after breakfast, hike, and still be home in time for an early dinner.

For families weighing city life against Hill Country life, trips like this are the cheapest part of the comparison: run the drive yourself at weekend pace, and you will know the real number for the weekend rhythm your family actually lives.

Go see for yourself

A Saturday at Enchanted Rock is a preview of Hill Country life with the volume turned down: open sky, bare stone, and a dusk that comes on slow and golden.
