A Spurs game night at the Frost Bank Center: 18,418 seats and 5 championship banners

By Phyllis Domingo, REALTOR® · San Antonio Relocation Specialist · 6 min read

The San Antonio Spurs play at the Frost Bank Center, an arena that opened on October 18, 2002 and seats 18,418 for basketball. The team behind it has won 5 NBA championships, more than any other club in Texas. Here is what a game night is actually like.

The numbers at a glance

The San Antonio Spurs play at the Frost Bank Center, an arena just east of downtown that opened on October 18, 2002 and seats 18,418 for basketball, per the arena's profile on Wikipedia and Britannica's Spurs history. The building has carried three names since opening, and picked up its current one in September 2023 when Frost Bank bought the naming rights.

The team it houses is why San Antonio is a basketball town: the Spurs have won 5 NBA championships, in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014, more than any other franchise in Texas.

What a game night actually looks like

A Spurs game is one of the friendliest big-league experiences in the state. The arena sits on San Antonio's east side, minutes off the interstate, and the crowd leans local: generations of San Antonio families in silver and black, with a genuine home-court feel instead of a tourist scene.

Doors typically open about an hour before tip-off, and security lines move quickly. Budget for parking in the surrounding lots and garages, and plan a little extra walking time from the farther lots on sold-out nights.

Why it is a great family night

Basketball is one of the most affordable live sports to catch, and San Antonio families grow up on these games. Between quarters you get the full show: the Coyote working the crowd, t-shirt tosses, trivia on the big board, and a crowd that genuinely stomps and sings during every timeout.

For newcomers, a game is also the fastest way to feel the city's pride. You will hear more Spanish and German heritage in one night of cheers than in a month of any textbook, and that is the San Antonio spirit in a nutshell.

Beyond basketball

The building seats about 19,000 for concerts, so it pulls in touring artists and family shows all year, per Ticketmaster's arena guide. You can live in San Antonio for years and end up inside the Frost several times a year, even if you never watch a full NBA game.

That makes it worth knowing the arena even before you have tickets to anything: the plaza, the food lineup, and the parking routine are the same for every event.

Make a whole day of it

Game days are a great excuse to see the city properly. Start downtown with a walk along the River Walk, grab pre-game tacos, then make the short hop to the arena. Leave downtown about an hour ahead of tip and you will be parked and settled with time to spare.

Let's find your home base

Many buyers tell me they want to be a short drive from the Frost, whether that means downtown, the near east side, or a neighborhood with easy highway access. That is exactly the kind of conversation I love. Call or text 210-744-5478 or use the contact page, no pressure.
