Boerne's Old No. 9 Trail runs 1.4 fully paved, ADA-accessible miles through town, and the Hill Country Mile stretches roughly 1.1 miles along Main Street with 80+ shops and restaurants. Here is how to do both in one morning.
Two numbers, one walkable town
Boerne is small enough to walk, and the town leans into it. The Old No. 9 Trail is a fully paved, ADA-accessible trail that runs 1.4 miles from Esser Road, near 358 Esser Rd., to Garden Street at Frederick Street, per the City of Boerne. The Hill Country Mile is the roughly 1.1-mile historic district along Main Street that holds most of the town's shops and restaurants, per Visit Boerne.
The trail
The Old No. 9 Trail follows a route tied to the old San Antonio-to-Fredericksburg road, so it doubles as a little history lesson, and TrailLink lists the full out-and-back at about 2.8 miles, per TrailLink. It is a favorite with walkers, runners, and families with strollers and bikes because it is paved end to end.
The mile
The American Planning Association named the Hill Country Mile a 2019 Great Place in Texas, and Country Living put it on its list of the Top 25 Small Town Main Streets in America, per the City of Boerne. The district holds 80+ shops, galleries, restaurants, and public art, many of them in limestone buildings that predate the highway era.
Do both in a morning
A great newcomer's morning: park near Main Plaza, walk a stretch of the trail along Cibolo Creek, then loop back onto Main Street for coffee and a slow look through the shops. If it is the second full weekend of the month, Boerne Market Days adds 100+ vendors right on the plaza.
Downtown Boerne's walkability is a big part of why it attracts families and empty nesters alike: errands, dinner, and a creek walk can all stay within a mile of home.
Why walkability matters when you buy
When you tour Boerne homes, pay attention to the walk: Can you reach the trail or Main Street without driving? If the 'walk to town' life is on your list, that proximity is one of the most consistent quality-of-life perks downtown Boerne has to offer, so it is worth checking on the tour exactly how the route goes.
Come walk it with a local
The best way to feel Boerne is to walk it, and I am happy to be the one walking with you. Call or text me at 210-744-5478 or use the contact page and we will plan a tour that includes a creek walk and a coffee stop.
