Vibe Master-planned, amenity-rich suburbia

Stone Oak is San Antonio's premier master-planned north side, and it's the neighborhood I steer relocating families toward first when they want new construction, resort-style amenities, and strong public schools in one package. It runs roughly 25 minutes from downtown, it's home to Reagan High School with its strong published ratings, and it has the best 'everything is five minutes away' convenience in the city.

The feel of the area

What it's like to live here

Developed from ranchland starting in the 1980s, Stone Oak grew into the region's largest master-planned community, with dozens of sub-neighborhoods sharing a web of parks, pools, greenbelts, and hike-and-bike trails. Homes are mostly 1990s to present, from charming courtyard builders to estate lots along fairways.

Life is organized around convenience: shopping, medical offices, schools, and dining cluster along Stone Oak Parkway and Loop 1604, so most errands are a five-minute drive. The neighborhoods' shared amenities, pools, and community events make it easy for newcomers to meet people fast.

The master plan does the community building for you. Most sections share pools and parks, neighborhood associations run holiday events and sports leagues, and the greenbelts thread all the way through, so kids ride bikes and walk to playgrounds without crossing a busy intersection. If you're moving from out of state, this is one of the easiest places in San Antonio to land and feel at home within a month.

Housing market

Homes and what to expect

Housing here is mostly 1990s to present, which means open layouts, big windows, and modern systems. You'll find charming courtyard-style builders, stone-and-stucco traditional homes, and estate homes along golf courses and greenbelts, with some sections offering gated entries and resort-style amenities. Market reports put typical home prices between roughly $375,000 and $650,000, with the overall median around $450,000 to $500,000, and luxury sections like Sonterra and gated enclaves from $700,000 well past $1 million. Lots are generally standard suburban size, a quarter acre or so, with larger estate lots in select sections. These are ranges from current market data, not promises; the right number for you depends on the section and floor plan.

Schools

North East ISD

Stone Oak is zoned almost entirely to North East ISD. The main feeder runs Stone Oak Elementary to Lopez or Bush Middle and then to Ronald Reagan High School, a school with strong published ratings (Niche). To the far north, some neighborhoods fall to Comal ISD and feed Smithson Valley High School, so confirm the exact zoning for any address; I check it on every showing. I've also written a full North East ISD guide, including its magnet programs and what families should know, which is a great starting point if the district is new to you.

Getting around

Commute and access

Stone Oak occupies the far north of Bexar County along Loop 1604 between U.S. 281 and Interstate 10. Commuters reach downtown in about 25 minutes and the airport in about 20, and the loop provides quick access to every quadrant of the city and to the Hill Country highways beyond.

Lifestyle

Things to do in Stone Oak

Weekends here mean soccer games, farmers markets, golf, and long walks on the greenbelts threading through the neighborhoods. The Shops at La Cantera and the Rim are a short drive for shopping, dining, and movies, Phil Hardberger Park sits right at the community's edge with its trails and land bridge, and Guadalupe River State Park and Natural Bridge Caverns are 30 to 40 minutes north for Hill Country day trips.

Who it's for

Good for anyone who wants new or newer construction, strong public schools, resort-style amenities, and everything within a ten-minute drive: relocating families who want Reagan feeders, professionals based on the north side or at the medical center, and military families who like the easy airport access. It's also one of the easiest neighborhoods for out-of-state movers because the community network does the introductions for you.

Parks and trails are woven throughout, so kids can ride bikes and walk to playgrounds safely.

How long is the commute from Stone Oak to downtown?

Plan on about 25 to 30 minutes to downtown in normal traffic, longer at rush hour. Many residents work closer in, at the medical center, the airport, or offices along the 1604 and 281 corridors, which keeps the commute reasonable from every direction.

Are there acreage options in Stone Oak?

Most of Stone Oak is on standard suburban lots, but neighboring areas like Bulverde and Timberwood Park, just north on 281, offer acreage within a 15-minute drive. I can pair a Stone Oak lifestyle with the right lot size for your family.

What do HOA fees cover in Stone Oak?

Most Stone Oak sections have a homeowners' association that covers shared pools, parks, greenbelts, and gates where they exist, and fees vary by section. I always pull the full HOA picture for the homes you like so you can budget it accurately before you make an offer.
