Fredericksburg by the numbers: a 39-mile day trip from Boerne

By Phyllis Domingo, REALTOR® · San Antonio Relocation Specialist · 6 min read

Fredericksburg is about 39 miles and 45 minutes west of Boerne, and the town plus Gillespie County surround you with nearly 100 wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms. History is the other draw: the National Museum of the Pacific War charges $26 for adults and the Pioneer Museum $12. Here is the honest day-trip plan.

The numbers at a glance

Fredericksburg sits about 39 miles west of Boerne, roughly 45 minutes on I-10 and US 87, and about 75 miles from downtown San Antonio, per distance-cities.com. It is the anchor of the Texas Hill Country wine region, and Visit Fredericksburg counts nearly 100 wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms in Fredericksburg and Gillespie County.

The town was founded May 8, 1846, by German immigrants under the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants, per the City of Fredericksburg history, and that heritage shapes everything from the stone storefronts to the bakery windows. It is small enough to walk and big enough to fill a weekend.

History worth the ticket

The National Museum of the Pacific War is the biggest show in town, and it is genuinely world-class. Admission is $26 for adults, $20 for seniors 65 and up, $18 for military, and $12 for students 10 to 17, with children 9 and under free. It is open Wednesday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Tuesdays.

The Pioneer Museum tells the German-immigrant side of the story with $12 adult day passes, $7 for seniors and military, and $5 for students, with children under 5 free, open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The day pass also covers the Vereins Kirche and the old county jail around town.

Wine country without the drive-home worry

Nearly 100 wineries, vineyards, and tasting rooms sit within Fredericksburg and Gillespie County, part of the Texas Hill Country AVA, the largest single-state wine-growing region of its kind in the country, per the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association. Tasting rooms cluster close to town and along Highway 290, so two or three stops in one afternoon is easy.

The honest planning note: designate a driver or book a guided wine tour, because the winery math adds up fast and the roads are two-lane Hill Country curves.

Turn it into a Boerne triangle

Fredericksburg makes a perfect long day from Boerne: leave after breakfast, do a museum before lunch, eat on Main Street, taste wine in the afternoon, and drive home after the crowds thin.

Pair it with the Enchanted Rock day trip, about 18 miles north of town on the same road, or the Lost Maples fall colors drive an hour beyond, and you have a whole Hill Country holiday toolkit. The Boerne wine trail covers the closer side of that map, and the Hill Country day trips guide rounds up everything else.

Who it suits

Fredericksburg works for nearly everyone, but a few kinds of visitors get the most out of it:

  • History buffs and WWII veterans' families, for whom the Pacific War Museum is a must-visit on a national scale.
  • Wine-and-weekend couples who want a walkable Main Street with real depth, not just a tasting crawl.
  • Boerne newcomers scouting their day-trip country; two museums and nearly 100 tasting rooms is a strong resume for visitor weekends.
